A key part of any website’s search engine optimization (SEO) strategy depends upon creating and maintaining a successful link exchange program. When the pages on a site have a number of inbound links from other high-quality and relevant web pages, the increase in page Rank (PR) lifts the linked pages higher in the search engine results pages (SERP).
All easier said then done, I’m afraid. That’s because the process of identifying and negotiating with ideal link exchange candidates is time-consuming and frustrating! It goes like this:
1. A great deal of time and effort gets expended in searching Google using the keywords that are relevant to the site that wants to initiate the link exchange.
2. As potential link candidates are discovered, additional time is spent determining the site’s Page Rank.
3. If the Page Rank is acceptable then even more time is spent visiting each site in order to determine whether or not the content on that site is relevant.
4. Then, the webmaster of the link exchange candidate site offers to make a link exchange. This step alone can take days depending upon how responsive the other webmaster is. My experience shows that very few webmasters answer their e-mail quickly, if at all, and even fewer are interested in exchanging links.
5. Once a candidate site is identified, and both webmaster have agreed to exchange links, those links must be developed and posted on each other’s site.
This entire process must be repeated for every potential link exchange partner that was identified. This is a process that could take weeks or months. Plus, it is not a one-time job. That’s due to two reasons:
1. Links disappear. They disappear either because the other site goes offline for any number of reasons, or the other webmaster scammed you and removed your link once you posted his or hers.
2. There must be a slow but steady increase in the number of links exchanged in order to foster a continuing increase in Page Rank.
A webmaster who is determined to execute and maintain a quality link exchange strategy can plan on investing at least 10 hours per week, or more, depending upon the size of the site! That’s a lot more time than the average webmaster has to spend, especially if the website is a part-time endeavor and he or she has a full-time job to attend to as well. And remember, link-building is just part of a webmaster’s duties. There are so many other tasks that demand time as well.
